Diopsys Vision Test for Glaucoma

Although there is a wide variety of devices that eye specialists can use nowadays, glaucoma continues to be a rather challenging disease to diagnose and treat early. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people aged 60 and above and refers to a group of eye diseases that can result in vision loss due to damage to the optic nerve.

Diopsys Vision Testing

Functional eye damage from glaucoma is usually assessed using a subjective method called the visual field test. This is a test that can be performed at your first doctor’s visit. Here, you will be asked to focus on the center of a screen while small lights flash randomly in various spots. All you have to do is press a button when you see the light. However, because this method needs active participation from patients, results are not always accurate.

But with the state-of-the-art modules of the Diopsys NOVA vision tests, such as Visual Evoked Potential or VEP and Pattern Electroretinography or ERG, specialists can now effectively detect vision-related problems and diseases sooner, get more accurate results, make more sound clinical decisions, and monitor treatment progress for eye diseases, such as glaucoma. In certain cases, this test could even potentially prevent blindness or vision loss.

How It Works

In order to perform an objective vision testing, physicians can invest in VEP and ERG and use them both to catch diseases earlier. Before the test begins, sensors will be placed on the patient’s head, similar to an EKG. Each test will measure a specific area of the patient’s eye to determine any functioning problems.

The Diopsys VEP examines the activity of the whole visual pathway of a patient’s eyes to find out how well their visual system is working. VEP can be conducted on patients as young as six months old to identify any vision disorders in the optic nerve. This test can also be used for people who have acquired vision problems after a stroke or traumatic injury to the brain. The VEP can help assess if the optic nerves are still intact.

Diopsys ERG, on the other hand, helps specialists assess the retinal function of a patient’s eye. When used together with other vision tests, such as VEP, this test can aid doctors in distinguishing whether the issue is in the retina or in the optic nerves. With ERG, signs that occur at a cellular level can be detected earlier on.

Diopsys vision tests for glaucoma will no longer require you to respond verbally or push a button and the entire process takes only about 10 minutes. With these streamlined processes, Diopsys visual testing technology is undeniably fast and easy. Additionally, physicians find the reports generated in these devices to be easier to understand. This helps them obtain a more accurate interpretation of a person’s visual system’s function, diagnose any eye disease or disorder, and even monitor the patient’s progress once treatment has begun.

Since eye diseases and disorders develop differently in every patient, customization on both Diopsys VEP and Diopsys ERG vision tests can be done according to the patient’s condition so they can fully analyze the patient’s visual health.
