Do Blue Lenses Really Help with Digital Eyestrain?

The answer to this question is in the affirmative. Blue lenses effectively shield your eyes from blue light. They help to prevent or reduce the intensity of digital eyestrain.

What Is Blue Light?

Blue light is the light that digital device screens emit. It is made up of blue light waves of varying wavelengths. Anything that gives off light is a blue light source, from the light bulb to the computer monitor and the TV. The sun gives plenty, high-intensity blue light too. Exposure to too much blue light causes digital eye strain. It also disrupts your circadian rhythm, causing you to stay awake for longer.

Blue Lenses

Blue lenses are lenses designed to protect your eyes from digital blue light by filtering the blue light. They are not blue themselves. Some are clear, while others have a yellow tint. They get their name from their ability to block the short-wave blue light, reducing your exposure to it.

Blue light from digital devices is far much weaker than that produced by the sun. But, people spend so much time staring at digital screens, intensifying their exposure.

The average time an adult spends looking at a digital screen is 11 hours a day. The eyes become subject to the immense blue light produced and start to strain. Blue lenses block a proportion of the blue light with their special coating and reflect it away. The amount of light reflected depends on the quality of lenses you buy.

How to Know If You Need Blue Lenses

Anyone who uses digital device screens for an extended period is a suitable candidate for blue lenses. If you are now having trouble sleeping, especially after using a digital device, you would also benefit from the lenses. If you have digital eye strain symptoms like eye fatigue, redness, itching, watery eyes, and others, blue lenses may improve your symptoms.

Take Precaution

But, even with your blue lenses, proper screen hygiene is essential. First, change the settings on your digital devices so that they emit less light through their screens. Also, find a screen guard for your computer monitor. It filters some blue light and prevents glares and reflections that could hurt your eyes.

The 20-20-20 rule may be of significant help too. The rule recommends that for every 20 minutes of work, you need to take a break and focus on something that is at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. But, even with this small break, an extended break is necessary. Take some time away from your desk to stretch, and walk around. Your body and eyes relax, giving you relief from fatigue and boosting your energy for the next work session.
